This calendar compiles information about events and meetings relevant to the human rights of older people. It displays information about events and meetings organised by Civil Society Organisations, National Human Rights Institutions, Governments and others. It also includes formal UN meetings and sessions that are relevant to older people’s rights and GAROP members’ advocacy on a new convention on the rights of older people. The calendar includes national, regional and international level events.
The 2018 theme of UNIDOP is “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions“. What better way to celebrate this Day than by celebrating the older people around the world who dedicate their lives to championing human rights?

The Symposium ‘Celebrating Human Rights of Older Persons’ will be held on the occasion of the UN International Day of Older Persons at the House of the European Union in Vienna.
There will be keynote speeches from Dr. Alexandre Sidorenko (former Head of the United Nations Programme on Ageing) and Dipl.-Ing. Shams Asadi (Commissioner for Human Rights of the City of Vienna). These will be followed by two panels focusing on ‘Strengthening Human Rights of Older Persons from the Perspective of Governmental and Non-Governmental Organisations’ and ‘Reports on Ongoing and Planned Research on Human Rights of Older Persons’ with inputs from a range of experts from Government, National Human Rights Institutions and civil society.

On Monday 1st October, a reception with a Cocktail, poster exhibition and performance by the UN Jazz Club will take place at the Bar Serpent, Palais Des Nations in Geneva. The reception will celebrate the older people around the world who dedicate their lives to championing human rights. This event is organised by the NGO Committee on Ageing Geneva with the support of the UNFPA, UNECE, OHCHR and WHO.
The NGO Committee on Ageing New York is organising a celebration of the International Day of Older Persons on 4th October. The event will be held between 10am-1pm at the UN Headquarters in New York and will be followed by a fundraising luncheon from 1:30pm-3:30pm. The event is also an opportunity to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
